The Final Day in Advanced Bobath Course in Barcelona

The Final Day in Barcelona. It was raining like in a light shower. So, first time I took a cab to get to the clinic.

I got some information about the others in the course. There were 3 basic instructors and one candidate. There is maybe 10 or 12 basic instructors in Spain and one senior instructor. So quite many if we look the amount to Finland? I also got some information about the salaries in Spain. It’s not easy to be a physical therapist in Spain if you think economically. The average salary per month is 1200-1500 €. So just enough to pay pay your living and to get something to eat. There’s quite tight tax policy too. You pay taxes for every euro you earn. So, tax with zero taxes not included.

Anyway, back for today’s topic. Spesific handling and clinical reasoning in upper limb. When you already have the postural control in your core and scapula, you can go to the upper limb. Sometimes of course vice versa… Depends what structure is the key point in the puzzle. We practiced handling all the way from scapula to elbow and to wrist and fingers. And what should be remembered with the hand? You should first get the wrist into action and to learn how to reach and after that how the fingers work J.

I really had almost the best days of my life here (”worklife”). It is fascinating to learn new and more about neurorehabilitation. The Bobath Concept and the professionals like Lynne Fletcher really can do magical things with people who has neurological problems. It is not always just the acute phase. Sometimes you need to get some neuropsychological issues work better first and after that you have possibilities to understand and learn more about your body’s movements and how to activate muscles. The demo patient (young under 30 years old guy) for example had stroke 1,5 years ago, but now in three days he has learnt maybe more than he could have learnt in acute phase. He had lots of neuropsychological treatments in the early days.

This is what should be remembered, even after 1 year there can be big changes in body and rehabilitation.

I am gonna take at least one Advanced Course more to get even better with my handling, because it is in a very different level in Britain if it’s the same as Lynne’s treatment sessions. And not just handling but also the clinical reasoning. I’ve learnt from the Best!

Thank you Lynne and Neurosalud Barcelona!

Ps the update took some extra time to get done because awful stomach flu…
